Medway Ports is the statutory harbour authority for a 27.3 mile stretch of the River Medway, from the Medway Buoy to Allington Lock.
River movements are monitored and controlled by Medway Ports' Vessel Traffic Services whose role is to facilitate the safety of all river users on the Medway from the largest container ships (Thamesport) and LNG vessels to leisure craft.
All vessels over 50m in length entering the River Medway need the services of a Medway Ports pilot, unless the Master holds a Pilotage Exemption Certificate.
Frequent hydrographic surveys of the Channels of the River Medway are carried out and these can be inspected or purchased from the Hydrographic Department.
Medway Ports Marine Services division are responsible for the maintenance and repair of navigational buoys in the Medway, including those which mark wrecks such as the SS Richard Montgomery.
The Marine Division produces a number of publications and forms, which are available to download from this site.
